Hyperglycemia & Glucose

Is characterized by a high concentration of glucose in the blood (greater than 1.26 g / liter or 6.9 mmol / l). Diabetes is caused when insulin deficiency and that sugar accumulates in the blood causing hyperglycemia, without being used by the body.
There are 2 types of diabetes: Diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and non-diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). The Central Hospital of Yaounde has become aware of various complications of this disease and have prepared a diabetes center.

Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes, commonly known as diabetes mellitus, is characterized by a high sugar in the blood (hyperglycemia). This rate is higher than 1.26 g / l (7.7 mmol / l) at a dose fasting or greater than 2g / l at any time of day. Diabetes type 2 (formerly Diabetes fat or non-insulin-dependent), the most common, is usually detected after 40 years. It is mostly other cases in the family. In this form of diabetes, the secretion of insulin (a hormone secreted by the pancreas that allows sugar to enter into cells to give them energy) is often minimal, but is very active in the cells (insulin resistance). The diabetes may be due to genetic abnormalities in hormonal diseases, to diseases of the pancreas, drugs .

Diabetes & Hypertension

Physical inactivity, obesity or substantial weight gain, there is a history of gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or a child born with a weight greater than 4 kg are risk factors. Hypertension and high cholesterol in the blood are often associated. The main complications of diabetes are the result of violations:

  • Let the small vessels (microangiopathy) Renal (kidney) can cause chronic kidney failure, eye (retinopathy) with risk of blindness, nervous system (neuropathy) involving motor disturbances and sensitivity,
  • Let the great vessels located in the heart, brain, members : myocardial infarction, stroke and lower limb arterial disease (blockage of arteries by clots containing portion of blood).

Hyperglycemia too much can cause coma with death as possible.
