The Goals Of Diabetes Treatment

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

insulin therapyThe goals of treatment are to maintain sugar levels (glucose) within the normal range during pregnancy and ensure that the fetus is healthy.

The physician must carefully examine both you and the fetus throughout pregnancy. Fetal monitoring to check the size and health of the fetus often includes ultrasound and stress testing.

* A nonstress test is a simple and painless for you and your baby. It involves placing a machine that hears and displays the baby’s heartbeat (electronic fetal monitor) on the abdomen. When the baby moves, its heart rate normally increases 15-20 beats above its regular rate.

* The doctor can see the pattern of your baby’s heartbeat compared to its movements and find out if the baby is fine. The doctor will look for increases in the baby’s normal heart rate that occur within a certain period of time. DIET AND EXERCISE The management of the diet can provide the calories and nutrients you need for your pregnancy, controlling blood sugar (glucose) levels and avoid the need to take medications. Stem Cell Therapy in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 & 2

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Diabetes type 1

The body’s autoimmune reaction to the pancreatic beta cells in the islets of Langerhans and the resulting destruction of these beta cells immediate cause a deficiency of insulin, causing Type 1 diabetesType 1 diabetes is a degenerative disease, traditionally treated with insulin injections. These injections replace the missing hormone, but treatment can lead to serious complications. Hyperglycemia may contribute to several complications, such as:

  • cardiac and vascular disease
  • eye and kidney disease
  • inadequate Vascularization
  • nerve cell damage (Nuropathy)
  • Diabetic feet
  • high susceptibility to infections
  • erectile dysfunction

Diabetes type 2

Type 2 diabetes used to be known as mature or developing non-insulin dependent diabetes. Although type 2 diabetes affects individuals over age 40, today there is a growing trend of cases in younger people, especially those with a family history of diabetes. Clearly, diabetes mellitus type 2 is undoubtedly the most common form, affecting 85 to 90% of people with diabetes. Experts estimate that almost one third of people with type 2 diabetes do not even know they have it. If the condition is not controlled, the consequences (as with type 1 diabetes) can be life threatening.

Recent Research to Prevent Diabtes

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Current research

  • A preventive approaches tested consists of administering small doses of insulin in people at risk. Although the preliminary results of these tests are very encouraging, experts say it is too early to abandon this track and it is better to wait until research on the subject to draw conclusions définitives
  • Researchers are currently working to develop a vaccine to prevent diabetes type 1. This vaccine prevents the immune system to destroy cells in the pancreas responsible for insulin production. A new research center has been established for this purpose in Australia.
  • Some experts recommend breastfeeding for at-risk children and some believe it should be avoided cow’s milk in these cases (see “Milk Cow” in the section Risk Factors)
  • It is possible that supplementation of vitamin B3 helps prevent the development of type 1 diabetes. The results of several studies conducted between 1987 and 1998, however, contradict this sujet12-15. A meta-analysis published in 1996 and on ten studies (only five double-blind placebo) indicates that treatment of niacinamide may help delay onset of type 1 diabetes by preventing the destruction of beta cells that produce the ‘insulin in the pancréas16. However, several trials analyzed were small (ten studies, 211 subjects in total) and the quality of their methodology.

Main Goal of Diabetes Treatment

Monday, February 1st, 2010

The main goal of diabetes treatment is to maintain the values of blood sugar within normal values as much as possible. Although it is difficult to maintain completely normal values, try to be as near normal as possible to be less likelihood of complications, either temporary or long term. The main problem in trying to tightly control the values of blood sugar, is that there is a decrease unwanted thereof (hypoglycemia).

Treatment of diabetes requires control of weight, exercise and diet. In many cases of type II diabetes, administration of drugs would not be necessary if obese patients lose weight and make orderly pursuit. However, reducing weight and increasing exercise is difficult for most diabetics. Therefore, it is often necessary to resort to either replacement therapy or oral hypoglycemic medication. Exercise promotes the direct descent of the concentrations of blood sugar and reduces the amount of insulin.

The diet is very important. In general, diabetics should not eat too many sugary foods and regular meals would have a uniform program. However, eating a snack before bedtime or during the afternoon sometimes prevents hypoglycemia in people who inject intermediate-acting insulin in the morning or afternoon. Since people with diabetes also have tendency to have high cholesterol values, dietitians generally recommend limiting intake of saturated fat. However, the best way to reduce cholesterol values is to control blood sugar levels and body weight.
